Allen Ginsberg
(1926-97), American Poet, associated
with the Beat movement. His
first volume Howl (1956) was initially censored
but became one of
the most widely read poems this century. Taught his
religious and
political ideas all over the world. The influences of his
Buddhist beliefs
are found across his work.
Jack
Kerouac
(1922-69), American Novelist, became
spokeman for the beat
generation, and is best known (...) for his
semiautobiographical novel
On the Road (1957) which describes the
wanderings across America
of Sal Paradise, a young writer, and his friend and hero,
Dean
Moriarty. Kerouac's other works include The Dharma
Bums (1958)
and The Subterraneans (1958).
Anne
Sexton
(1928-74), American Poet,
often refered to as a confessionalist poet.
This refers to a style of writing which she pioneered
drawing heavily
on personal experience and psychological analysis. The
accessability
of her poems ensures their continueing popularity. She
started writing
as therapy but still took her own life in 1974.
Lee
Ranaldo
(1956-), American Singer
and Poet, member the music formation
Sonic Youth. The lyrics and poetic volumes that he has
produced are
easily linked to the Beat tradition. Near Here
and Road Movies are
the first two of his publications. Ranaldo has also been
active getting
some of the lesser known Beat material published.
