Modernism is a general term which refers to a number of different art movements.
Dada is seen as part of Modernism. It seems that much of what was going on in
the No Wave scene in N.Y. in the early 80s was in a way similar to what was going
on at the Dada events early on this century. Screaming, provoking the audience
or finding other means to shock were techniques that both Dada and No Wave
used. This was done in an attempt to break through to, and explore the
unconcious. Andre Breton, a French dadaist, believed in a future resolution of the
state of dream and reality into a kind of absolute reality, a surreality. A poem by
