During the late 70s and early 80s a new form of music emerged. Which could
be described as Art Rock. This movement was also known as No Wave as a
pun on the New Wave scene. No Wave clearly had its roots in late 70s punk
music. The Ramones and The Talking Heads were such bands that influenced
No Wave and therefore also the music of Sonic Youth. The No Wave movement
did not only include musical artists though. Visual artists were also involved. This
is evident in the distinctive way in which Sonic Youth uses cover art for their
albums. Glen Branca is often seen as the one artist who turned music into an art
form during that period. It is therefore hardly surprising that both Thurston and Lee
have worked with him.
